B. E. T. A. MANAGED APPRENTICE MEETS MSP AT M.T.S.

Angela Cobstance speak with Tom McIlwaine at MTS

Angela Constance, the Scottish Government Minister for Youth Employment visited MacTaggart Scott Engineering at Loanhead earlier this year and held a discussion with some of our apprentices. She was impressed by the group and their answers to some topical questions.

Shown on the right is the Minister with Tom McIlwaine a BETA managed final year apprentice in the OMS. Tom is now specialising in CNC machining after learning how to use manual lathes and Mills to produce complex components in various exotic metals to precise tolerances in his earlier years of his apprenticeship. Tom is explaining to the minister what the CNC machining centre is doing and how it works.

Tom at the end of his apprenticeship will have achieved a SVQ level 2 in Performing Engineeering Operations, a SVQ level 3 in Engineering: Manufacturing along with his National Certificate and Higher National Certificate in Manufacturing.

Both his knowledge and the skills he has learnt during his apprenticeship will be of a great assett to MacTaggart Scott in keeping them in the forefront of precision engineering.
