B. E. T. A. MANAGED APPRENTICES RECEIVE M.A. CERTIFICATES
BETA is pleased to announce that it has successfully managed six apprentices who have completed their vocational qualifications at level 3 and their educational components. All six apprentices have now satisfied the Sector Skills Council criteria (SEMTA) which, has allowed them all to receive their Modern Apprenticeship Certificates this Christmas (2012).
All apprentices mentioned below have gone through a four year training programme consisting of a Foundation stage (SVQ level 2 in broad based engineering covering Mechanical, Fabrication, Welding and Electrical/Electronic training), Post Foundation stage (SVQ level 3 in a job specific pathway) and an Educational component (National Certificate and Higher National Certificate in a related engineering discipline) to underpin the level 3 SVQ they were working towards in the workplace. Some of the apprentices below have also gained additional certificates pertinent to their job.
The B.E.T.A. managed apprentices who qualified this year gaining SEMTA and EAL certificates were:
Liam Gibson and Liam Stewart: Both Liams work at Turnbull and Scott Engineering Ltd in Hawick.
Liam Gibson works on Manual Machining equipment which involves using Lathes, Milling Machines, Jig Borers and Pipe bending equipment to produce the components that go into making the products Turnbull and Scott produce. To gain his Technician MA Certificate Laim achieved his National Certificate in Engineering Systems, Higher National Certificate in Engineering Systems along with his SVQ level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations and a SVQ level 3 in Engineering Manufacturing. (Manual Machining) with additionality in Pipe forming and bending. During his apprenticeship BETA entered Liam into the First year apprenticeship competition this then aided him in being selected from Scotland's apprentices to go to NASA in America for 2 weeks to experience engineering at its limits. Liam is now attending University financed by his company and wants to achieve his honours degree.
Liam Stewart works in the Fabrication Department of Turnbull and Scott where he has learnt welding skills in Manual Metal Arc welding (MMA) Metal Inert Gas welding (MIG), Metal Active Gas welding (MAG) and other Continuous Wire Processes. As with Liam Gibson, Laim Stewart has gained his Technician MA Certificate achieving his National Certificate in Engineering Systems, Higher National Certificate in Engineering Systems along with his SVQ level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations and a SVQ level 3 in Fabrication and Welding (Manual welding)

Steven Mabon Works at Emtelle (UK) Ltd, Hawick,
As a Maintenance Engineer, maintaining Engineering Systems used to produce polymer products via continuous extrution systems. Steven has been involved in learning how to maintain mechanical equipment, electrical quipment, fault find problems on these systems, analyse the problems and put forward cost effective and efficient solutions. Assessed by John Robson at Emtelle Steven has shown great aptitude and skill over the years and has been a valued asset to the maintenance team. For Steven to gain his MA certificate at Technican level he has had to achieve his National Certificate in Electraical Engineering, Higher National Certificate in Electrical Engineering along with his SVQ level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations and a SVQ level 3 in Engineering Maintenance (Engineering systems). Steven continues to work at Emtelle and is looking to a bright career there.
Chris Page, Craig Russell and Rory Sutherland all working at Mainetti (UK) Ltd, Jedburgh
Both Chris Page and Craig Russell are Maintenance Engineers, maintaining Engineering Systems used to produce polymer products through the use of injection moulding systems Over the four year training period they have been involved in learning how to maintain mechanical equipment, electrical equipment, PLCs, fault find problems on these systems, analyse the problems and put forward cost effective and efficient solutions. Assessed by Billy Grieve and witnessed by Stephen Fisher at Mainetti (UK) Jedburgh, both Engineers have shown great aptitude and skill over the years and have been a valued asset to the Mainetti maintenance team. For Chris and Craig to gain their MA certificate at Technician level they had to achieve their National Certificate in Electraical Engineering, Higher National Certificate in Electrical Engineering along with their SVQ level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations and a SVQ level 3 in Engineering Maintenance (Engineering systems). both Engineers continue to work at Mainetti (UK) Ltd and are looking to a bright career there.
Rory Sutherland started of as a Maintenance Engineer however, after his first year training was complete his skills proved to lie more in the Manufacturing where Rory demonstrated an aptitude in carrying out refurbishment and modification of mechanical equipment. After discussions it was agreed that Rory would take the pathway of Engineering Manufature (Fitting and Assembly) This involved him Producing components using Handfitting techniques, Assembling mechanical prodiucts and repairing and modifying mechanical assemblies. Rory had to learn how to weld as some repairs required MIG welding. Assessed by Billy Grieve during his on the job training, Rory is a hard working Craft Engineer who enjoys his job very much. For Rory to gain his MA certifacte at Craft level he had to achieve a National Certificate in Electraical Engineering, along with a SVQ level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations and a SVQ level 3 in Engineering Manufacture (Fitting and Assembly). Rory continues to work at Mainetti (UK) Ltd and is also looking at having a bright career their.
